Support for “Bendy” Joints, Pain & Fatigue – Gold Coast & Tweed
Being “super flexible” can look like a fun party trick – until it starts to come with pain, fatigue, injuries, or difficulty keeping up with everyday life. At Ohana Physiotherapy, our joint hypermobility physiotherapists support children, teens, and adults living with hypermobility, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), and complex disabilities across the lifespan.
Our Approach to Joint Hypermobility at Ohana
“Ohana” means family – and that’s how we treat our clients. We’re a family-owned clinic with a strong focus on paediatric care, but we also support adults and older clients with hypermobility and EDS across the lifespan.
We take a gentle, understanding approach and work closely with families, caregivers, schools and medical specialists to create therapy that is supportive, realistic and grounded in your real-life needs. When you’re with us, you’re part of the Ohana family.

How Ohana's Physiotherapy Helps with Hypermobility
Your physiotherapy plan may include:
Targeted strengthening
Building up the right muscles around hypermobile joints to improve stability and reduce strain.
Balance & coordination training
Fun, play-based activities for kids (and functional tasks for adults) to improve motor control, reduce clumsiness and prevent falls.
Posture & movement retraining
Adjusting how you move, lift, sit or exercise so the joints are protected – not overstressed.
Pain & fatigue management strategies
Pacing daily activities, planning rest breaks, and using gentle movement to manage flare-ups.
Sport, school & work support
Practical tips and exercises to help you participate in the activities that matter most to you.
Education for you and your support network
We take time to explain what hypermobility is (and isn’t), answer questions, and empower families, carers and support workers to help day-to-day.

Support for Families & Caregivers
Hypermobility doesn’t just affect one person – it often impacts the whole family. That’s why we:
Include parents, caregivers and support workers in sessions
Provide clear home programs that are realistic for busy families
Offer guidance on daily routines, school participation, and community activities
Communicate with your wider team (GPs, paediatricians, occupational therapists, schools) when appropriate
Our aim is to help your family feel confident in supporting your child or loved one, not overwhelmed.

More Information
What Is Joint Hypermobility?
Joint hypermobility means the joints move through a bigger range than “average”. Some people are just naturally more flexible; for others, hypermobility is linked to connective tissue conditions such as Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
Hypermobility isn’t always a problem. However, it can become challenging when it leads to:
Joint pain (especially after activity or at night)
Repeated sprains, strains, or dislocations
Muscles working overtime to stabilise “wobbly” joints
Fatigue and difficulty keeping up with sport, school or work
Feelings of clumsiness or poor balance
Our physiotherapists help you understand what’s happening in the body and create a plan to protect the joints, not punish them.
Signs Joint Hypermobility Might Need Physiotherapy
Everyone’s experience is different, but you may benefit from seeing a joint hypermobility physiotherapist if you notice:
In Children & Teens
Constantly sitting in “W-sitting” or unusual postures
Struggling with handwriting, fine motor tasks or sport skills
“Floppy”, tired, or slower to get moving compared to peers
Frequent trips, falls, or ankle/knee sprains
Complaints of leg pain, “growing pains”, or headaches after school or sport
In Adults
Ongoing joint or muscle pain that feels out of proportion to activity
Joints that “slip”, “give way” or feel unstable
Difficulty maintaining posture at a desk or in standing jobs
Chronic fatigue or feeling “worn out” by everyday tasks
A history of being very flexible, doing gymnastics/dance, or easily “overstretching”
If you recognise yourself or your child in these descriptions, our team can assess what’s going on and help you move more comfortably and confidently.
Do I need a diagnosis (like EDS or HSD) before seeing you?
No. Many people come to us with “bendy joints”, pain or fatigue without a formal diagnosis. We can assess how your joints and muscles are working, help manage symptoms, and, if needed, suggest whether further medical review might be helpful. This information is general only and doesn’t replace medical advice – always speak with your GP or specialist about diagnoses and investigations.
Do you treat both children and adults with hypermobility?
Absolutely. We see babies, children, adolescents and adults with hypermobility and EDS. Sessions look different depending on age – from play-based therapy on the mat for kids to functional strength and activity planning for adults.
Can you come to our home or child’s school?
Yes. In addition to our Robina clinic, we provide mobile physiotherapy in homes, schools, and community settings across the Gold Coast and Tweed Coast, which can be especially helpful for clients with fatigue, anxiety, or mobility challenges.
How many sessions will we need?
This depends on your goals, symptoms, and how your body responds. Some people benefit from a short block of sessions to learn strategies and exercises; others benefit from ongoing support over time, particularly where there is chronic pain, fatigue, or complex disability. We’ll discuss a plan with you after your assessment.
