What is Toe Walking?
Toe walking is when a child walks on the balls of their feet, with little or no contact between their heels and the ground.
It’s common for toddlers learning to walk, but if it continues beyond the age of 2 or 3, it could indicate:
- Muscle tightness (especially in the calves or Achilles tendon)
- Sensory processing differences
- Habitual movement patterns
- Neurological or developmental concerns

How Physiotherapy Can Help Toe Walking & Motor Planning Difficulties
- Detailed assessment of gait, balance, muscle length, strength, and coordination
- Stretching and strengthening programs for tight or weak muscles
- Sensory and balance activities
- Motor learning and movement sequencing tasks
- Fun, play-based exercises that engage your child
- Parent education and home activity plans
- Collaboration with occupational therapists or other specialists if needed

When Should You Seek Help for Toe Walking?
You should book an assessment if:
- Your child is over 2 years old and still consistently toe walking
- They are unable to place their heels on the ground when asked
- You’ve noticed balance issues or frequent falls
- There are concerns about leg tightness, muscle weakness, or delayed motor milestones
- Your child is avoiding certain activities like jumping, hopping, or climbing
Early assessment is key—the earlier we start, the better the outcomes.

More Information
Is toe walking always a problem?
Not always! It’s common in toddlers. However, if your child is over 2 years old and still consistently toe walking, it’s worth seeking an assessment to rule out underlying causes.
What happens during a physio assessment for toe walking?
We’ll check your child’s muscle length, joint mobility, walking pattern, balance, and coordination. From there, we’ll design a plan that may include stretching, strengthening, sensory strategies, and motor training.
Can physiotherapy help with motor planning difficulties?
Absolutely. Physiotherapy can help improve your child’s coordination, balance, sequencing, and body awareness, making everyday tasks and playtime easier and more enjoyable.
How many physio sessions will my child need?
It depends on the cause and severity of the issue. Some children improve quickly with a few sessions and home exercises, while others may need ongoing support over several months. We’ll discuss your child’s individual needs during the first appointment.
