What is Torticollis?
Torticollis is a condition where your baby’s neck muscles become tight or imbalanced, making it hard for them to turn their head fully in both directions.
This can lead to:
- Head turning preference (often to one side)
- Restricted neck movement
- Flattening on one side of the head (plagiocephaly)
If left untreated, it can affect your baby’s motor development and head shape.
What is Flat Head Syndrome (Plagiocephaly)?
Flat head syndrome (also called plagiocephaly or brachycephaly) is when a baby develops a flat spot on the back or side of their head. This often happens when babies spend long periods lying in the same position.
Signs of flat head syndrome include:
- Noticeable flattening on one side or the back of the head
- Uneven head shape when viewed from above
- Possible asymmetry of the face or ears

More Information
How early should I bring my baby in for torticollis or flat head treatment?
We recommend booking an appointment as soon as you notice any signs of head turning preference, limited neck movement, or flat spots on your baby’s head. Early intervention (ideally before 4 months of age) tends to deliver the best outcomes and helps support your baby’s motor development.
Will my baby grow out of torticollis or flat head syndrome without treatment?
Some babies may show improvement with time and increased movement, but many benefit from guided physiotherapy to correct muscle tightness and encourage symmetrical development. Without treatment, persistent torticollis can lead to ongoing head shape issues, developmental delays, and postural asymmetry.
What happens during a physiotherapy session for torticollis or flat head?
A typical session includes:
- A full assessment of your baby’s neck range, head shape, and motor development
- Gentle, hands-on techniques to improve neck mobility
- Parental education on positioning, tummy time, and stretches
- A customised home exercise plan designed to fit into your daily routine
Your baby’s comfort and safety are our top priority.
How many sessions will my baby need?
The number of sessions depends on your baby’s age, the severity of the condition, and how they respond to treatment. Some babies need just a few sessions with home exercises, while others with more significant tightness or head shape changes may require ongoing support over several months.
We’ll give you a clear plan after your initial assessment.
