Is your child limping off the field, complaining of knee pain after training, or sitting out sports they used to love?
At Ohana Physiotherapy, we understand that kids are not just small adults — their growing bodies need a completely different approach. Whether we visit your home on the Gold Coast or see your child at our Robina clinic, we help young athletes recover faster, move better, and get back to the sport they love.
Why Kids Need a Sports Physio
Children’s bodies are still developing, which means injuries can affect growth plates and long-term movement patterns if left unmanaged. We help families work through those “should we just rest it?” moments, especially with:
- Knee & Heel Pain: Conditions like Osgood-Schlatter and Sever’s disease are extremely common in active kids and very treatable.
- Ankle Sprains: The most common sports injury in children — often undertreated and prone to becoming recurring.
- Overuse Injuries: Repetitive training loads without adequate recovery can cause stress reactions, particularly in young swimmers, runners, and gymnasts.
- Shoulder & Elbow Pain: Common in throwing sports, tennis, and swimming — early management prevents long-term issues.
- Post-Surgery Rehab: Structured return-to-sport programs following ACL reconstruction or other procedures.

Care That Fits Around Sport and School
We know your family’s schedule is packed with training sessions, school commitments, and weekend games. That’s why we offer two ways to access our kids sports physio:
- We Come to You (Mobile Gold Coast): We’ll assess your child at home — ideal for post-surgery rehab or when getting around is difficult. We can also observe home exercise setups and advise on training modifications.
- Visit Our Robina Clinic: A welcoming, purpose-built space where young athletes can be assessed properly and run through sport-specific movement testing.

What Happens in a Session?
No intimidating equipment or confusing jargon — we keep it real and relatable for kids. We’ll watch how your child moves, run some sport-specific tests, and chat with both your child and you about what’s going on. You’ll walk away with a clear plan: what’s happening, why it’s happening, and exactly what to do next. We’ll also talk to coaches when it helps.

Common Conditions We Treat
We treat the full range of sports-related injuries and conditions seen in active children and teenagers:
- Sever’s Disease: Heel pain caused by growth plate stress — extremely common in kids aged 8–14 who play running or jumping sports.
- Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Knee pain just below the kneecap, often flaring up during growth spurts in active kids.
- ACL & Ligament Injuries: Assessment, pre-surgery preparation, and structured post-operative rehab.
- Stress Fractures: Bone stress injuries from repetitive loading, particularly in runners, gymnasts, and dancers.
- Muscle Strains & Tendinopathies: Hamstring, quad, calf, and hip flexor injuries common across field sports.
- Movement Screening: Pre-season checks to identify weaknesses before they become injuries.
More Information
Do I need a GP referral?
Can I use Private Health or NDIS?
Yes. If your Extras cover includes physiotherapy, you can claim in-clinic or through your provider’s app. We also support Self-Managed and Plan-Managed NDIS participants.
When is it safe for my child to return to sport?
We use evidence-based return-to-sport criteria rather than arbitrary time frames. Your child returns to full training and competition when their body is genuinely ready — not just when the pain stops.
What if my child plays multiple sports?
Great question. We look at the full picture — training load across all sports, school PE, and downtime. Overuse injuries in particular are often about total load, not just one sport.
