How Physiotherapy Supports Children with Autism to Grow, Move and Thrive

physio for girl with autism Gold Coast

For many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), movement challenges can impact daily life—from playground games and classroom participation to self-care and social connection. At Ohana Physiotherapy, we recognise that movement is more than just physical—it’s a pathway to confidence, communication, and independence.

What the Research Tells Us

Motor difficulties are a common and often overlooked feature of autism. In fact, more than 80% of children with ASD experience challenges with coordination, balance, posture, and body awareness.

Recent studies highlight the value of physiotherapy:

  • Castaño (2023) found that children with ASD who participated in structured physiotherapy three times a week for eight weeks made significant improvements in gross motor skills compared to those receiving conventional treatment.
  • Ji (2023) reviewed 13 studies on exercise-based therapy and found large gains in locomotor skills, and moderate improvements in object control and balance—especially when sessions were play-based and goal-directed.
  • Hynes & Block (2023) examined 29 studies and concluded that physical activity not only supports motor development but also positively affects social interaction, behaviour, and cognitive function.

Together, this research shows that structured, movement-based therapy can support autistic children across multiple areas—not just physically, but socially and emotionally as well.

How Physiotherapy Helps Children with Autism

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we provide engaging, individualised programs that are tailored to each child’s needs and goals. Our team has completed additional training in working with neurodivergent children and we are committed to delivering care that is respectful, supportive, and neuro-affirming. We have experience working with children with ASD and understand the importance of addressing sensory, emotional, and behavioural needs during therapy.

Key areas of support include:

Motor Coordination & Skill Development
We support children in developing essential motor skills such as walking, jumping, running, and throwing. Our focus is on enhancing timing, control, and fluidity of movement. Activities often involve crossing the midline—an important skill for daily tasks like dressing, handwriting, and playing ball games.

Proprioception & Body Awareness
Children with ASD often face challenges with body awareness and spatial orientation. We use targeted exercises to improve proprioceptive input, helping to build better balance, coordination, and overall confidence in movement.

Strength & Endurance
Improving muscle strength and endurance enables children to engage more fully in physical activities, keep up with peers, and manage fatigue throughout the school day.

Functional Independence
From tying shoelaces to navigating stairs, we focus on building the motor skills children need to be more independent at home, in school, and in the community.
