Early physiotherapy can make a big difference in their strength, development, and confidence.

Premature babies often need extra support, and early intervention physiotherapy can provide significant benefits for infants born prematurely by promoting healthy neurological and motor development. At Ohana Physiotherapy on the Gold Coast, we provide compassionate, family-centred care for premature babies, supporting parents every step of the journey and guiding baby’s development from birth.

Early intervention physiotherapy for infants can help address challenges that arise from premature birth, supporting milestone achievement and healthy growth during the critical early stages.

Why Families Choose Ohana Physiotherapy

Many parents are referred to physiotherapy in hospital, but public waitlists can stretch for months or only allow appointments every 2–3 months. At Ohana, we provide timely, personalised sessions so your baby gets the support they deserve. Regular sessions are important for optimal progress, especially in the early stages of therapy.

Our physiotherapy supports both babies and families by focusing on:

  • Reaching motor milestones (rolling, crawling, sitting, walking)
  • Supporting babies with low muscle tone or stiffness
  • Improving feeding and breathing coordination
  • Promoting strength, flexibility, and posture
  • Reducing the risk of developmental delays
  • Providing family education and home programs
  • Ensuring paediatric physiotherapy services are adapted to each child’s changing needs

Our team continually adapts treatment plans as your child grows and develops, ensuring paediatric physiotherapy remains effective and tailored to their unique journey.

Why Early Physiotherapy Matters

A baby’s brain and body grow rapidly in the first months of life. Early physiotherapy takes advantage of this unique window of neuroplasticity – helping muscles, joints, and the nervous system adapt and grow stronger, and supporting each child’s ability to reach their potential.

Physiotherapy supports a child’s growth at different ages by providing age-specific care that addresses developmental milestones and physical needs unique to each stage. For premature babies, it is important to consider their corrected age—calculated by subtracting the weeks of prematurity from their chronological age—when assessing developmental milestones, as this gives a more accurate picture of their progress and supports optimal development.

Put simply: the earlier we start, the more progress we can achieve.

What to Expect in a Session

Every session is gentle, baby-friendly, and play-based, with a strong focus on making your little one feel safe and supported. We’ll guide you through each step, showing you practical ways to encourage your baby’s movement and development at home, while ensuring sessions are comfortable and minimize pain for your baby.

Your Baby is in Safe Hands

Premature babies are at a higher risk of facing developmental delays and neurological conditions due to their early arrival into the world. At Ohana Physiotherapy, our paediatric physiotherapists are providing personalised physiotherapy interventions that support early development and help each baby reach their full potential. We understand that every baby’s journey is unique, and our experienced physiotherapists work closely with families and a team of health professionals—including occupational therapists and speech pathologists—to deliver truly comprehensive care on the Gold Coast.

We support premature babies with a wide range of conditions, including:

Many babies born prematurely may take a little longer to reach important developmental milestones like rolling, sitting, or walking. Our evidence-based physiotherapy interventions are designed to support early development, helping your baby build strength, coordination, and confidence as they grow.

Premature babies have a higher risk of developing cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that can affect movement and coordination. Our team works closely with families to create a tailored treatment plan that supports your child’s unique needs and goals, focusing on improving motor skills and supporting long-term development.

Some premature babies may experience brachial plexus injuries, which can impact arm and hand movement. Our gentle, targeted therapies help support recovery and encourage healthy movement patterns from the very beginning.

Babies born prematurely are more susceptible to flat head syndrome, which affects the shape of the head. Our physiotherapists provide practical guidance and support to help parents prevent and manage this condition, promoting healthy head control and positioning.

Conditions such as flat feet or toe walking can also occur in premature babies. Our team uses evidence-based approaches to support the development of strong muscles and bones, helping your baby move comfortably and confidently.

Your Baby is in Safe Hands

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we know how important it is to feel confident in the people supporting your baby. That’s why we combine professional expertise with a gentle, family-centred approach designed to reassure parents and help babies thrive.

Supporting Your Baby to Grow, Move, and Flourish

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we believe every child has their own unique potential. Our role is to nurture that growth with gentle guidance, clinical expertise, and genuine care — helping your child build the skills and confidence to engage with the world around them. We support children in overcoming developmental delay and work to reduce the risk of long term complications associated with premature birth, using evidence-based techniques tailored to each child’s abilities.

More Information

If your baby was born before 37 weeks, we recommend an early assessment within the first few months. The earlier we can begin, the more we can support development.

Concerns with feeding, breathing, stiffness, low tone, or delayed milestones are good reasons to seek physiotherapy. Additionally, neurological signs such as unusual movements, persistent fisting, poor head control, or lack of response to stimuli may indicate the need for physiotherapy in premature babies.

Yes, we welcome both private patients and families accessing the NDIS.

A baby is considered premature (or “preterm”) if they are born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy.

  • Late Preterm: 34 – 36 weeks

  • Moderate Preterm: 32 – 33 weeks

  • Very Preterm: 28 – 31 weeks

  • Extremely Preterm: Less than 28 weeks

For premature infants, corrected age is calculated by subtracting the number of weeks born early from their chronological age. Using corrected age is important when assessing growth and development up to age 2, as it provides a more accurate picture of a premature baby’s developmental progress.

Premature babies often need extra support because their lungs, brain, muscles, and digestive systems are still developing.
