Understanding Assistive Technology (AT) in the NDIS: What Parents Need to Know

When many families hear the term “Assistive Technology” (AT), they often think only of wheelchairs or large equipment. But assistive technology can actually include a wide range of supports that help children participate more independently and confidently in everyday life.

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we regularly support families across the Gold Coast with physiotherapy assessments, equipment trials, and recommendations for assistive technology through the NDIS.

What Is Assistive Technology (AT)?

Assistive Technology refers to equipment, devices, or products that help a person complete everyday activities more safely, easily, or independently.

For children, AT may support:

  • Mobility
  • Communication
  • Play
  • Posture and positioning
  • Participation in school or daycare
  • Community access
  • Daily living skills
  • Independence

AT can range from simple low-cost items through to more specialised equipment.

What Types of Assistive Technology Can the NDIS Fund?

The NDIS generally divides Assistive Technology into three categories:

Low-Cost Assistive Technology

Low-cost AT is typically under $1,500 per item and is usually the easiest to access.

Examples may include:

  • Visual timers
  • Communication boards
  • Fidget tools
  • Sensory supports
  • Continence products
  • Adaptive cutlery
  • Shower stools
  • Basic seating supports

These items are often designed to support participation and independence in everyday activities.

Mid-Cost Assistive Technology

Mid-cost AT generally ranges from $1,500 to $15,000 and may require additional evidence or therapist recommendations.

Examples may include:

  • Communication devices
  • Walkers, standing frames
  • Adaptive seating
  • Pressure care equipment
  • Power-assisted mobility equipment
  • Therapy equipment

These supports often require more consideration to ensure they are appropriate for the child’s needs and goals.

High-Cost Assistive Technology

High-cost AT is generally equipment over $15,000 and typically requires detailed assessments, reports, quotes, and supporting evidence.

Examples may include:

  • Complex wheelchairs
  • Complex standing frames
  • Custom mobility equipment
  • Specialised communication devices
  • Vehicle modifications
  • Home modifications

These supports are often highly individualised and may involve collaboration between therapists, equipment suppliers, and families.

How Does the NDIS Decide What to Fund?

The NDIS considers whether equipment is:

  • Related to the child’s disability
  • Reasonable and necessary
  • Safe and appropriate
  • Likely to improve participation or independence
  • Supported by evidence and professional recommendations

The NDIS also looks at the level of risk involved with certain equipment.

Some items are considered:

  • Low risk — simple equipment that can usually be used safely without professional setup
  • Higher risk — more complex equipment requiring therapist involvement, setup, training, or monitoring

This is one reason why allied health assessments and reports can be so important.

Why Physiotherapy Assessments Matter

For many children, physiotherapists play an important role in helping determine what equipment may best support their mobility, posture, comfort, safety, and participation.

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we may assist families with:

  • Equipment assessments
  • Functional assessments
  • Equipment trials
  • Letters of support
  • NDIS reports
  • Collaboration with suppliers and other therapists

Our goal is always to help families find practical supports that improve everyday life and participation.

Common Misconceptions About Assistive Technology

“My child isn’t disabled enough for AT”

Assistive technology is not only for children with severe physical disabilities. AT can support a wide range of functional challenges and developmental needs.

“AT only means wheelchairs”

Many low-cost supports also fall under assistive technology, including communication tools, adaptive seating, sensory supports, and mobility aids.

“The most expensive option is best”

The best equipment is the one that safely and effectively meets the child’s goals and everyday needs.

“My child is too young”

Early intervention equipment and positioning supports can sometimes make a significant difference for younger children.

Supporting Participation and Independence

The right equipment can help children:

  • Access play and learning opportunities
  • Participate more confidently in the community
  • Improve comfort and posture
  • Reduce fatigue
  • Increase independence
  • Support family routines and daily life

Every child’s needs are different, which is why assessments and individualised recommendations are so important.
